Painting Formica Countertops

There are several different painting methods used for transforming old looking ingenuous laminate tops into new creations. Formica countertops, when resurfaced correctly, can last for a long ticks. In this article, we will be reviewing a few of the products that are available over the crosswise, which are specifically designed for remodeling this type of material. I will besides provide the necessary steps for resurfacing tops using oil based paints that are then sealed with a urethane top coat.

Rust - Oleum

This paint brand company has developed a one - coat application countertop paint that can be utile with a roller and small brush. The preparation process is somewhat easy. All you will need to do is wash the tops with soap and water, then lightly sand them. Next, apply masking tape to protect the walls and cabinetry. Then, roll and brush one coat of the Rust - Oleum paint on the counters and allow it to dry for three - to - four days. Once dry, the surface will have a satin - gloss finish. It is not necessary to apply a coat of primer prior to applying the Rustoleum. The product has sixteen different color tinting options to choose from. The special coating is made with HomeShield Antimicrobial Protection, which is designed to reduce the chance of mold or mildew growth.

Giani Granite

The Giani company has developed a system for changing the coloration of many different countertop surface types to look like Granite. The kit comes with everything that is needed to transform laminate, Formica, Corian or wood countertops into beautiful shinny - cut simulated Italian Granite. They call this a paint by number system that begins with applying the primer, then three colors of paint are dabbed on with a sponge and finally the top - coat sealers are applied. The rollers, foam brushes and sponge applicators are all included in each kit. The selections of kit patterns are named Roma Red, Sapphire Blue, Emerald Green, Chocolate Brown, Bombay Black and Sicilian Sand. It will take about four days to complete painting a kitchen or bathroom vanity Formica countertop.

Oil Based Paints

I actually gleaned this information form an article that I read on Tim Carter ' s - Ask The Builder website. If you would like to paint your Formica laminate countertops a custom color of your choice, this is the system to use. First you will clean the tops using a mild soap solution; I like to use liquid Dawn dish - washing detergent for this step. Then, lightly sand all surfaces that will be painted and vacuum the dust off of the counters. Apply one coat of the oil - based primer, two coats of the finish color oil base paint and then four applications of clear floor urethane finish. Follow the manufacture ' s suggestions for drying times between coats.

Prior to starting this type of resurfacing project, it is important to be absolutely certain that you want to do this. Once you begin the painting process there is no way of returning to the original Formica countertop color.

Rush Jobs are Not Allowed

You will need to set aside sufficient time to complete the project in a professional manner. I would plan on spending no less than four to five days remodeling your tops. This will allow the primer coats, finish paints and final sealers sufficient time to cure. After the job is complete, you should not clean the surface of the painted Formica laminate countetops with any type of cleanser for about two weeks.

Waterproof exterior paints essentially protect the outer layer and interiors from dampening from moisture and humidity. While water seepage can cause major damage to the structure of the building, and cause the interiors to look shabby and unkempt, waterproof paints have a protective outer coat that resists moisture or water from the rains from accumulating on the walls. This results in super - shiny interiors and sqeaky - clean exteriors.

Heat reflective exterior paints, significantly reduce absorbed heat in the wall by selective reflection of infrared light. They remain cool, even in dark colours, reduce thermal shock and in some climate zones negate the need for added insulation at all. Avoid the use of deep tone exteriors, ( that are non - reflective ) because, although they might be aesthetically appealing, add absorbed heat to the building envelope and are contrary to basic principals of energy efficiency.

Plein Air Painting And Dream Interpretation Doxidor, Lab And Vegetable Garden Transforms Art And Me

Today is my birthday and when Dad called to ambition me Cheerful Birthday, I couldn ' t commensurate broadcast him how old I am now! " Think about this before you get and dog, " I warned my Self.

Katie is not getting section younger either. I have been thinking of painting her since we adopted her 14 years ago. This shift, I conclusively did it! I have always been intrigued by her white on ashen coloring, and illusory painting her on an antique pearly patterned bedspread which tomboy used to sleep on years ago.

Because I finished up painting Kate, Jim mutual from the grocery store to answer he had stopped at the SPCA and wanted me to energy see two pooches he had empirical. Reluctantly, I went. When we arrived, one of the dogs he had told me about was out front getting clipped and brushed. Fur and dog mess was universal! We went inside briskly. " No way, " I inferring to my Self.

In the cobby we met the other dog Jim wanted me to see. A shy wee dog, ' Honey, ' was in a abode with expanded dog. Schoolgirl looked like a puppy, small with a dainty rounded face. Rendering her single out, we discovered chick was all told two years old ~ full grown! This dwarf pooch was onliest 24 pounds, a doxidor: a dueschund / labrador merge. Nymphet charmed us both. Reluctantly, I agreed whereas Jim made arrangements to take her home to see if Kate would again approve.

Over the adjacent few days we worked at getting to know each other. On the way home, she squirmed out of my arms and down between the back seats in the van into an afghan which was on the floor. When we got home, she wanted to stay there. At the house I found another afghan and put it down for her. Immediately she made another nest. She is a nester.

Nesting is something I have never been good at. It seems I am always running around doing something. Sit down and be still? Hard for me to imagine me doing that. Got to be DOING something.

The day after she arrived, I took out the vacuum to tidy up. I saw her out of the corner of my eye as I took the vacuum out of the closet. The deck door was open and spying the vacuum, she quickly slipped outside. I went about vacuuming. Jim came in a while later and asked where she was. No where! She had disappeared! We spent the next hour searching the yard, surrounding woods and adjoining neighbors ' yards.

Back at the house, ' Sneekers ', as we had started calling her for her white paws ~ was curled up in a new nest behind Jim ' s computer desk. There isn ' t much space back there between the desk and wall of windows. Just a narrow passageway to get in and a pile of wires!

As each day passed I spent more and more time with her, coaxing her out of her nest, encouraging her to play. Slowing me down, I guess. I didn ' t feel much like going out to paint, so I set my easel out on the deck and painted a view of my vegetable garden.

The obelisk Jim and I had constructed just last weekend was already filled with cucumber and tomato vines. I sat while I painted, too lazy to stand, I thought to myself. I set up a larger canvas than I normally use en plein air. This one is 203 x 243, not huge but significantly larger than the 9 x 12s I often use.

As I was painting, a neighbor paddled into my painting with his two children. They stopped to catch a bass or two, then paddled away. I quickly brushed them into the picture without thinking whether I really wanted them there or not! The sun moved lower in the sky and finally I felt the need to quit. Most of the garden was now in shadows.

Light and shadows ~ this is what I have been balancing out in my life all week. In the painting of Allie, ( Allie ' s Gift ) everything was darkish, varying shades of dark. In this painting of Kate the inverse is true. I didn ' t see it until this morning when I wrote down my dream. Dream: I see a low key pattern of darks; darker darks and lighter darks. I am inverting the image. Now it is a pattern of lights ~ high key lights, lighter lights and darker lights. Inversely proportional.

This dream let me see what has been going on all week! Between the paintings and the new dog ~ I have been balancing my life, inverting my perspective on things! In this painting of the garden, I played. I played with the imagery... letting the canoe of children fishing enter into my world without thinking as to whether it would upset my world or not! I let the game I was playing in my vegetable garden onto my canvas of life.

This little dog turned my life right side up! And just when it looked like she might NOT be successful, she amped up the stakes. Toward the end of the week I went to vacuum again. This time she was lying on the floor in my bedroom. So I told her I was going to close the door while I ran the vacuum. When I came back 15 minutes later she was under the bed shaking like a leaf. I let her stay there awhile. Checking on her throughout the morning, I finally coaxed her out. I put her on the afghan in the den and sat there on the floor with her and held her while she trembled.

" I don ' t know what happened to you, " I said out loud to her. " I ' m sorry. I ' m so sorry it happened, whatever it was. " I continued. As I spoke I stroked her head. And as I did I felt my Self let go of whatever it was that had kept me doing, doing, doing until I thought I would drop. We let it go together.

Today, on my birthday, I painted these two quick paintings of Sneekers. She was sitting on my sofa ~ a thing I never permitted a dog to do! I had to paint quickly because she changed positions often. The sofa is brick red so I used alizarin crimson to draw her shape quickly, directly onto the canvas. By the time I had the shapes in, she had moved. I responded by gently blocking in the colors the best I could remember.

Then I went and got another canvas. This time she stayed snoozing a little longer. Afraid she might move again, I continued at the fast pace. I liked the gestural quality of the first one, playful. " So what if my couch isn ' t really pink? " This way I can have a pink couch without having to live with it! Sleeping there on my spot on the sofa she continued teaching me how to play. The blue thing she is sleeping on is a needlepoint pillow I made 35 years ago. I not only let her sleep on it ~ I enjoyed painting it! I am a hard case, I admit. Transforming a workaholic? FAITH... plays a woman! I guess an old dog CAN learn new tricks.

Popular Painting Styles Realism Painting Techniques

The Realism painting style depicts life being it absolutely appears without major glorification, drama or feeling. This movement attempts to keep the artists interpretation to a bare minimum. The thought is to modern life in its natural environment which often includes the ordinary, the mundane and lined up the unseemly.

Side message that seems to proceed from a realistic painting is meant to be a direct production of what was in reality happening at that specific moment in ticks. It is, however, in keeping with this style for the artist to finger compositional elements for the what for of besides markedly communicating the facts of an event without changing its connotation or scope.

This style of painting originated in the mid 1800s in France as a reaction to the predominate Romantic movement of that time. This period also coincided with the development of photography. French artist Gustave Courbet is considered to be the father of the realistic style. His famous painting, A Burial at Ornans, depicts the 1848 funeral of a relative and is generally credited with kicking off this artistic style.

Other significant artists that incorporated realism painting techniques in their work include; Jean Baptist Simeon Chardin, Charles - Francois Daubigny, Francisco Goya, Winslow Homer, Edward Manet, John Singer Sargent and Andrew Wyeth just to name a few.

A partial list of other subcategories of realism include:

Naturism is a term that is sometimes used interchangeably with the broad term realism. Real subjects and events are painted in their natural settings.

Hyper - Realism or Photo - Realism plays extreme attention to accurately displaying absolutely every minute detail of a subject. The end result can resemble an oversized, sharply focused photograph.

Classical Realism is a relatively modern movement that attempts to return the realistic painting methods and craftsmanship of pre 20th Century artists. Artists rely only on their observational skills without the use photography.

Fantastic Realism attempts to use the realistic techniques of the old master painters ( before 1828 ) with added religious symbolism.

Social Realism grew out of the great American Financial Depression of the 1930s. The intent of these works of art was to realistically depict the devastating struggles and injustice of that era.

Romantic Realism renders its subjects realistically but with the freedom to add the possibilities of how things could be or even should be based on traditional romantic ideology.

Tips For Painting In The Style Of Realism:

1. Think of yourself as a news photographer. Your job is not necessarily to join a cause or take sides. Your work should involve accurately and clearly communicating a snapshot of everyday life for the average Joe. Do not let your emotions tempt you to represent people in a flattering way. Paint what is actually there and let the chips fall where they may. This can be a wonderful exercise for learning to see like a true artist.

2. Paint realistically by paying attention to representing color, proportions, perspective and other critical elements as true to the moment as possible.

3. Use any medium that lends itself to painting realistically. Oil and acrylic paints tend to dominate but there is nothing wrong with experimenting with pastels, pencils, markers or pen and ink.

4. Start with using earthy colors that are dominant in nature such as variations on yellow and brown.

5. Gain a commanding grasp of the fundamentals of painting. So often talented but self - taught amateurs produce paintings that are not carefully crafted. Even small inaccuracies in perspective, for example, can absolutely destroy the illusion of realism. Consider going to a formal painting school or purchasing a thorough video painting course on DVD.

For the serious art student, learning realism painting styles should be a mandatory part of their education. The fundamental skills and techniques needed to successfully paint in this style will always come in handy even when the time comes to experiment with less realistic painting styles.

Painting Colors With Goethe

In painting, you blend colors and deal with differentiation. But there are much too many color effects, that argot be explained by most color theory and color shove clue.

Im an artist since 1991. Stable when I didnt use color conclusively, I noticed that a silvery painted on somber gets a different look than a piceous painted on ashen. When you paint a semi - transparant snowy over nigrescent, it gets a hiemal, bluish tone. And when you paint a semi - transparent sooty over white, it gets a snug, brownish tone.

Years subsequent I found, that this phenomenon can be explained by Goethes theory of color.

Goethes doesnt juggle with wavelengths, atoms or breaking indexes - instead he consciously uses one his own perception. He found that for color to surface ( in for archetype the surface ), you need light, darkness and a transparent cast of matter ( like air, wash, glass etc, )

Sizzling colors ( chicken - orange - fuchsia ) turn up when you see darkness before light, and you see blues when, seen from your standpoint, you see light before darkness. In a prisma, it works about the same way. Check out my website, for more on that.

Of course, atoms and wavelengths have a truth of their own. But its a machine - truth. We dont see atoms or wavelengths. Newtons theory of color is good for building color - tvs, but for art it was a disaster. More than once, I heard my colleague - painters declare color actually doesnt exist, and is a purely subjective phenomenon. Thats not something an artist can work with.

With Goethes theory of color you cant build color tvs, because it describes the ideal part of nature itself. But Goethes theory of color is great for artists. It applies to all painting techniques, including desktop graphic design.

I took some lessons of two watercolorists. They were experts in a method developed by a unique watercolorist ( Liane Collot - dHerbois ) who took Goethes knowledge as a basis, and experimented with it to explore the features of every single color. She also found out, that colors dont have to mix as matter at all. She could bring out a radiant magenta, by using only blue and yellow paint. The magenta was there for everyone to see. Even if it was only light, it appeared as if actually painted on. And we all know, you dont get magenta, when you mix yellow and blue paint - you get green, when you mix yellow and blue.

But more important: I noticed that the color effects I learned happen exactly the same way in mechanical and digital color reproduction. The interval color that was created in a painting, comes out stronger on a photograph of the painting, or on an LCD screen or a color copier.

In color photography and graphic design these color effects play a role too. Professionals learn to more or less deal with them, but they are never really explained. When you do digital photography, and work you your pictures on the screen, youll probably know that inexplicable magenta hue, coming from nowhere. When you make a picture in black and white, and have very well - balanced tonal values ( light and darkness ), stripes of green and magenta appear. When they touch, you get blue. This also happens, when you color - copy a black and white picture, with the lid open. The funny thing is: before I found this out, I learned from a watercolorist, that magenta and green can make a light blue interval color

The effect of the interval is not only about color mixing as light. It has to do with the effect of darkness or shadow as well. For the effect to appear, colors must be equally strong, they must be painted atmospherically, and there must be a little space in between, where both dont come. The yellow interval between green and red can be explained by color mixing as light, but the magenta interval between yellow and blue cant. The darkness is playing a role there too. I have spoken about it with a goethean science teacher, he doesn ' t understand it yet either. But I ' m sure it will be understood some day.

There is still a lot to explore, when it comes to color effects. This is really a kind of science, and we all know science is a very slow process. But at least now I know, why reds look great when painted on white semi - transparant, and blues look ugly when you paint them that way.

Painting Business - How To Make $30 - $70 Per Hour Doing Small Simple Drywallplaster Repair Jobs

Making $350 - $500 a stretch whereas a house painter is not owing to easy thanks to some would have you believe in the residential / commercial realm - consistent if you are a larger contractor with a crew. But if you know a few drywall / plaster repair secrets, making this courteous of money is indubitable possible. I know. I have done it. Let me unravel.

Thanks to a painting business lessor over the years, I have found a niche in my business locale people will have problems with their drywall or plaster and they are totally clueless on how to fix it themselves. Assured, you will come across those who tried, but the point influence always tainted out to be butt - deformed!

A lot of the drywall in homes built from the 1980? s and all the way up to today have issues. Things like soak damage, loose recording seams, nail pops, etc. One daily basis for weaken damage is whereas of a leaky upstairs shower.

Again, it is not uncommon for a new home to have a problem leak somewhere on the roof that is maybe letting water in. The water travels down the wall and wrecks part of the ceiling and wall in a lower room in a short period of time.

Maybe the customer wants to sell their house. They get the roof leak fixed and now this is where you and I come in. You have done some free advertising like word - of - mouth, you get referrals, you have a small ad in the phone book or from online advertising, etc. and you get a call.

Next you go over and look at the problem. In their front foyer you see a couple of minor tape seams that are loose and a small section of textured ceiling that needs to be fixed and re - duplicated using a common crows foot texture. The customer has touch up paint left over for it. They are motivated to get it fixed so they can sell the house and buy another one.

You eyeball it as about a days labor. You offer to repair it for say around $335. 00. They say yes and you schedule it for the next day or whenever.

You come the first day for about an hour and tear out the bad, do a quick deep - fill and put a fan on it overnight to help it dry. Then you go back the next day and you spend 6 hours re - coating, and drying it with a heat gun or hairdryer etc. You do the job in 7 hours total and your net profit is $320 out of $335 because materials needed was basically just some drywall compound, gas to get back and forth and they had leftover paint.

Other scenarios may be older homes that have broken plaster. These can be surprisingly easy and fun to repair. Again, they call you, you go over and look at it. You count up the time ( 8 maybe 10 hrs. or so ) and materials ( usually dirt - cheap ) and you give them a figure of $500 - $600 because of the size of the repair.

They give you the go ahead and you pencil them into your schedule. You finish the job in 9 hours and you make 95 % profit. Other common plaster repairs may be large cracks in plaster ceilings. A common problem that can be easy to repair if you know how.

Other common drywall jobs may be texturing walls and ceilings. Two guys working together can make some good money at this. There are also small jobs hanging and finishing sheet rock in basements or garages. They may want you to paint it afterwards as well.

People do not know anything about drywall / plaster repair. They expect it to be somewhat costly. Jobs look more complicated than they are but since you know how to do them its duck soup for you!

You go in and spend 1 - 3 hours tearing out the old part like a surgeon, patching and doing a deep fill. You go back the next day for a few more hours, maybe back again a third day to finish, paint, etc. and get paid.

If you look in your phone book you will see small display ads under drywall or plaster repair that say " We Love Small Jobs " or " No Job Too Small ". Sure they like small jobs - this is where the easy money is. Small, 7 - 10 hour repair jobs that command $30 - $70 per hour.

If this type of business interests you, you can do it as a profitable sideline, or full - time business. You can have a buddy or your wife or one of your kids be your partner as well.

Painting Terms and Techniques in Painting

The following painting techniques and terms are used throughout the oil, watercolor and acrylic art creation. Having a preferable sympathetic of these items should make learning painting and enjoyable to the new artist. Hopefully being a creation art student, you are following tutorials location you progress on your voyage to creating the coming masterpiece, best shot incorporating some of the following items into your artwork.

Sustentation

This is the duration that is used to express a source of art material. Artists use several types of material to create art. Sometimes they plane use another than one stake in a single piece of art. A few art mediums include; oil, acrylic, and watercolor paint, write down, coal, and pastel. Therefore if you hear the expression agency, it smartly refers to the source of art material that is on the paper or canvas.

Dabbing

This is a technique that is used bona fide often when painting with subdivision foothold. You can use a dabbing technique to make trees, bushes, flowers, and prone grasses. Smartly use a flat bristle brush, dunk it in the paint, and then touch the tip of the brush to the canvas or paper. You can press harder for a thicker application of paint or lighter for a thinner application. When using the dabbing technique with oil paint, be bare careful not to muddy succeeding colors.

For exemplification, when painting bushes, apply the darkest below - painting color opening, then apply highlights to areas of the bush using a lighter color. Since the lead off color will still be wet, you need to be immensely careful not to smudge the lighter color into the darker color, unless of course that is what your intentions are. With acrylic paint, it ' s over easy to just wait 10 minutes or less before adding the highlight color because the under - painting dries that quickly.

Leaving negative space

Notice the negative space in the pine tree photo that accompanies this article. The space within the leaves is not filled in with paint!. Too many times beginners try to fill in the entire space. In art classes, I have even had to hold the hand and paint brush of students to prevent them from filling in the entire space. Doing this always makes people laugh, and then they have that ahaaa moment where they see that their tree looks more lifelike by doing this.

Dry Brushing

This is a technique that is used in many acrylic paintings. It requires getting the smallest amount of paint on a dry brush and then literally brushing it onto the painting with extremely light strokes. Because dry brushing is used for things like mist and sun rays ( things you can typically see through ) it is critical that it is done with a very light hand.

Dry - brushing is also used to make objects look weathered or old. It ' s okay to practice these techniques on paper before starting your first lesson on a canvas. Once you are comfortable with the technique, it can be used to add sun rays, mist or fog. Dry - brushing is a very effective technique for adding drama to an otherwise plain painting.

Highlighting

Simply wipe off the brush, add some lighter color and dab on or dry - brush touches of lighter color where the sun would be touching items such as trees, leaves wood or grass. Everything has more than one color to it. Light is always reflecting and changing the appearance of items. Be sure to add varying colors to your works. The highlight colors usually get lighter as you proceed.

Shadows

In a painting, shadows are always present, similar to highlight colors. You create shadows by adding touches of dark color to areas like under roof eaves, and along unlit edges of items. The color that you use is simply a darkened version of the main color. Cast shadows add much drama and effect to a painting as well.

A vase on a table for example, looks much more realistic if you add color to the table where a cast shadow would fall. The color is darkest closest to the object and fades to lighter as you move away. I like to use the dry - brush technique to create the furthest portion of the shadows.

Making an accurate drawing

Many artists use a grid to produce an accurate drawing of still life or even landscapes. In certain circumstances this method is preferred. There are other methods, but depending on what you are painting, I wouldn ' t worry too much about accuracy at the beginning stages of your art career.

If you are painting a landscape for example, what difference does it really make if your tree ' s branches are exactly correct? I would however pay attention to proportions. This just means to make trees their accurate size in relation to what is around them. Sometimes you would paint a tree completely off the canvas because that is the correct proportion of the scene.

Gesso

This is a primer used to seal the surface of the canvas before painting with acrylics. It is creamy and white and I often use it to " wet " the canvas before painting the sky and water backgrounds of the paintings. Gesso can be purchased at any art supply store and is definitely something you should have on hand before beginning your acrylic art lessons.

Wash

A wash can be used to add thin layers of paint to a canvas or to add mist over the top of dry paint. To create a wash, you must dilute the paint with a small amount of water to give it a thinner consistency. Watercolor artist use washes very effectively. Layers of color upon other layers blend and produce beautiful results. Acrylic paint can also be diluted with water and applied as a wash over dried layers to produce effects like fog or mist. Sometimes I use wash layers to give a certain effect like a yellowish tint to a weathered old barn or table. I ' ve also used an orange wash to add drama to an evening sky scene.

Scrubbing

This is used mostly for the underneath layers of the painting ( all paintings have layers; it is what gives them depth and makes the pictures look " real. " To scrub, use a dry brush and rub the paint to soften it. Scrubbing needs to be done with a bristle brush and is done with acrylic paint.

Scumbling

This is done to make foliage and other plant growth look more realistic. To scumble, simply paint multiple unorganized and overlapping layers in different directions to create dense, thick, interesting foliage. Be very careful when scumbling that you don ' t fill in all the space. Remember to leave that crucial negative space.

It would be impossible to cover all techniques on painting and painting terms in one article. The ones mentioned here however are some of the most commonly used. You will surely encounter these terms and techniques as you begin your journey into the world of art.

Painting Your Home ' s Exterior - DIY Tips

If you are planning to paint the exterior of your home, your introductory decision is do I hire a painter or do the job myself. Exceeding than half the cost of using a professional painter is labor inasmuch as doing the job yourself can be a prodigious reserves. Painting your home is a odious and labor protracted job but a cramped preparation and tough work can produce sheer satisfying collision.

If you bias to do the job yourself the following tips will help produce a great looking cost direct job.

Tips:

1. Tools and Equipment

Using the proper tools will help produce a safer and higher quality job. Make thoroughgoing you use the correct ladder or scalpel for the job. Follow the recommendations for ladder and scalpel safety. Most ladders have warning labels cognizant on the ladder.

Use a good quality brush and roller. Good quality tools last longer and help make the job easier. Make sure you have drop cloths readily available to cover areas that need protection such as sidewalks, driveway, porches, patios, decks and shrubbery.

2. Surface Preparation

Surface preparation is a critical step to producing a quality, professional looking job. All damaged wood should be repaired. Use a paint scrapper, putty knife and sander to remove all flaking, peeling and blistering paint. Minor damage to wood surfaces can be repaired with a quality wood repair product from your local building supply store. I recommend using goggles, gloves and a dust mask while scrapping and sanding. This is hard, time consuming work but it will help produce an outcome that will make you proud.

3. Choosing Paint

Choose high quality paint. Choosing a lesser quality paint may save you a few dollars now but you will pay over time. A high quality paint is easier to apply, easier to maintain and more durable than the cheaper paints.

4. Painting the Exterior

Paint from the top down to avoid dripping paint on surfaces you have already painted. Start with the gutters, fascia and eaves and work your way down the wall surface. Using a good quality 4 or 5 inch brush will make for an easier faster job. Check for and correct drips and runs as you go along.

Painting the main walls can be painted with a brush, roller or both. If you have grooved siding, the grooves should be painted first. Paint the grooves in a 4 to 5 foot section and then roll or brush the flat surface before moving to the next 4 to 5 foot section. If you have lapped siding, paint the underside of each lap in a 4 to 5 foot section and then roll or brush the flat surface before moving to the next 4 to 5 foot section.

5. Painting the Exterior Trim, Windows and Doors

I recommend using a 2 or 3 inch angled brush to paint trim. Paint in line with the woods grain to accomplish a smoother finish.

When you are painting windows, paint the stiles, rails, casing and then the sill. There is no need to mask the glass when painting window or door glass. Paint should lap onto the glass by about 1 / 16 inch. Clean up any excess paint on the glass by wrapping a cloth over the end of your putty knife while the paint is still wet. Any paint you miss can be easily cleaned up with a razor blade after it dries.

Painting doors is much like painting trim and windows. Paint in the direction of the wood grain if the door is made of wood. Paint the insert panels and panel moldings first making sure to get paint into the joints and creases. Now paint the rails, vertical stiles and mullion. Don ' t forget to put a drop cloth under the door or better yet, take the door down and place it on a sawhorse to do your painting.

6. Clean Up

Always clean your brushes thoroughly immediately after painting. The cleanup will be much easier and a clean brush will last much longer.

Cleanup will depend on the paint you use for the job. Latex paints are cleaned with soap and water while oil based paints are cleaned with paint thinner or any solution recommended for cleaning oil based paints. Never pour paint thinner or excess paint down the drain or onto the ground. Check with your local government for proper disposal.

Painting Perceptions

We would all like to make a good ahead impression. For paragon when we moxie to a job vacation. Do I look delightful? Am I dressed appropriately? Do I sound ingenious? How will they perceive me? Away, let ' s apply this to art. Does the painting look professional? Is it fitting into my type? Is it intense enough? Does it make an egghead statement? How will the witness perceive it?

We know that art is a matter of taste. What you like and what I like is the result of two different perceptions. The perception is what initially draws us in at - a - glance. Artists are looking to make an impact of some sort and are high on perceptions. They could paint bright paintings or bold lines, paintings of people, pet painting and other subjects. However, an artist ' s impact may not make a good first impression and the perception becomes a negative one. That ' s when perception becomes a like or a dislike and the overall perception of the artist gets permanently established or potentially damaged.

Is it possible for an artist to know how his or her art is going to be perceived before the first brush stroke? We must be truthful to our art and not be influenced by others. Or, perhaps we should be influenced by others so that we can gear our art towards their taste and give a good perception? A gallery says " we want you to paint big, bold flowers on a 4 ' x 6 ' canvas. " This will be their perception of great art in their gallery. We paint it because we are being paid, even though their perception of bright paintings of flowers is not the perception we want to portray. You are working too closely with the painting to notice any faults. Even when you take a step back to get the overall look of the piece, you are still blinded by all the details. You need a fresh eye so you start asking family and friends for feedback but they are not honest with their comments and so you are still in doubt as to the perception. You don ' t want to show it to an art professional for fear of a negative perception. But you do anyway and then you are surprised by their positive perception. Then you are thinking how could I have doubted my own perception?

Perhaps your perception of the " Irises " is high because it is a Van Gogh? What if you were walking by this painting in a gallery and had not noticed it until someone said " that ' s a Van Gogh! " Your perception now becomes higher and you stop to look. Are we really truthful about our perceptions or are we just influenced by status?

Should we really listen to the art critics? Is their perception better than ours?

After all, what does anyone know? It ' s just a perception!

Painting Robot Applications - What Will These Devices Be Used For

Last tour, we had a quite interesting argument at our think tank about robotic painting machines. Specifically, we began conversation about how these systems might be designed to service all the needs and applications that humans would find for them. Obviously, there are endless applications and I ' d be joyful to mention a few here in this article, after I reveal how they might work. Okay, let ' s chat.

If you need to paint a goodly surface, compatible seeing a stomping grounds you ' d want a appliance that could paint twisted surfaces akin for archways justice, transition to flat surfaces comparable because ceilings, floors, roofs, and ceilings. Perhaps there might be a software menu which asks;

( A ) First, " Choose Surface " because for the Mural or paint to come out right it matters the porous nature of the surface, for best desired results, and saving paint, only exactly as much as needed for efficiency.

( B ) Calibrate Humidity for Today.

( C ) Choose average yearly humidity for your area.

Now, let ' s talk about some applications. We might scale up this system, or scale it down depending on what we were paintings. Maybe the Astroturf logos for the Super Bowl, a Cruise Ship, or someone ' s arm, as in a tattoo - is that even possible you ask? Sure it is, scale Down unit or develop; Laser Tattoo system, place arm in saddle; select image; Are you totally sure about image # 1688? ( Y ) or ( N ) and in Spanish too! Now press start and the tattoo will be completed.

A medium sized system might become a franchised operation or a business opportunity, and the operator / owner would load the machine in a van, deliver it to the job sight, set it up and let it paint? For marketing they might pay Sotheby Real Estate Agents for referrals to the franchisees who buy the system to do high - end residential murals. And they might also paint larger multi - family dwellings, apartments, or even at the University or Colleges; Dorm Rooms, Apartments for student housing, Gyms, or heck " what color do you want that mascot again? "

When painting at schools, one could focus on murals on the exterior or interior, for instance; school classrooms to inspire innovation, creativity, thinking, learning, history, reading, math, the arts, etc. Back to the concept of multi - unit housing; Apartment Rental Businesses might buy these robotic painting systems to apply; Mold Coatings preventing lawsuits.

Even the hotel industry might get into the sector as well. Think of some of the applications.

( A ) Mold Spore Coatings.

( B ) Murals save need for furniture by 25 % cost savings for hotels.

( C ) Theme ' ing rooms.

( D ) Paint Wood grain on Doors to make them look more substantial, solid, and inviting, and

( E ) Spray on Solar Panel Technologies and coatings.

Unlimited applications once the robotic engineers create these efficient painting machines. Please consider all this and think on it.

Painting Contractor Tip - Avoid Gimmick Painting Tools

It ' s frustrating to spend solid earned money on all in one painting tools that don ' t work vigorous. I ' m convinced you have empitic them displayed in stores and tabloids. Most of these paint applicators whack to cede the average person an substitute for for good ole strife with the brush and roller. Most painting contractors will impart you that gimmick type tools fail miserably in performance. For the most fraction, they are a away of money and eternity.

Below are several examples of the products you should avoid.

1. Avoid lather painting pads. Foam painting pads with the edge guide tolerance about a 1 / 64 to a 1 / 32 of an inch orifice of unpainted area below the guide. You will need to cut in this area with a brush anyway, so it is a waste of time. In addition, the foam pad does a poor job of spreading paint so paint coverage suffers. You most likely will need 2 coasts of paint to properly cover. Plus, some of the foam applicators require you to purchase a special pan.

2. Avoid any products that have multiple parts and pieces. Fumbling around with all these loose parts will waste your time. Also, they increase your cleanup time.

Below I have listed some things you can do to decrease your painting time. These include equipment know by professionals to increase productivity.

1. When rolling your walls use a to 1 inch nap for your roller frame. Thicker naps hold more paint, providing more roll time per dip.

2. Andropolis sells a roller nap that holds 100 percent more paint and works with a standard size roller frame. This will significantly cut down on time to roll out paint on your walls.

3. Purchase a good quality brush. The benefits are many: a. Quality brushes pick up paint more easily. b. They hold more paint. c. Their quality bristles allow more accuracy while cutting in. d. They spread paint more evenly. e. Top quality brushes save on brush time.

Our painters use Purdy brushes for all the above reasons. The Bottom line is they save us money because they cut down on labor cost. 4. You can save a lot of time and create straight lines by taping off your trim and walls with blue tape. If you are not a professional painter, you can lose a lot of time trying to create straight lines. One handy tool that will improve your performance is a roll of blue tape. It ' s quick and will give you very straight lines.

5. Cover up cost a lot less time than clean up. Be sure and use tarps to cover floor areas completely and protect furnishings. Sometimes a new product comes along that truly can save time.

It is best to ask a seasoned painting contractor what he thinks about the product. If he has used the product for very long he will be able to give you valuable feedback.

Remember packaging can be misleading. They are designed to sell. The above recommendations will give you the best results for the money.

Painting Information Is Necessary

Painting is a pattern of art that applies color, pigment and paint to a surface wall or canvas to considered an sensation or abstraction visually. Painting could be an art form or could be a component in carpentry. Painting may deal with historical or religious matter or it may establishment about abstract figures or designs. The history of painting is whence broad that it needs thorough information since that it may be fully grasped by an ordinary person. The technique of painting consists of the evolution of a masterpiece or work of art from the artist ' s perspective or point of view. The technique would govern the style and manner in which the artist depicts or relates a story, event or thoughts. Thus, a painting on the wall or mural has a different expression compared to the painting on canvas. Usually, the artist executes his painting in the fresco technique fully different from the painting on wall decoration.

Fresco painting is the oldest form of expression. This was known during prehistoric time where the paintings were seen inside the caves in France and Spain. As said earlier, painting is used as component in construction that is a common trade among builders or craftsmen. Painting is the last finishing touch in a building, house or public works. In artistic form, it could be found on the surfaces of walls, wood, mugs, glass, shirts, clay, leaf, copper, canvas, paper or any solid object that would incorporate with other materials like pebbles, sand or cement.

Painting is one way of expressing the creative side of the artist or his concept of politics, religion or any subject that he cannot express through words. Painting is an extension of an artist ' s thought and feelings that is why painting information is important. Do you know that part of history of painting in Eastern and Western portion of the world is predominantly spiritual? This is evident in the mythological figures found on jars or pottery in biblical times. Michelangelo painted the interior walls and ceiling of The Sistine Chapel with scenes from the bible.

Painting on paper was already popular during the 18th century. Water color painting is divided into two types namely: polychromatic painting with transparent or semi - transparent color and polychromatic with opaque colors. Pastel painting, on the other hand has been practiced from the 18th century. This is the best technique because it does not need binders of oil, varnish or other media. The painting is the result of the fertile imagination of the artist, his mood and his thoughts.

Painting Your Skirting Boards Can Make Your Room Look Stunning

Prevalent of us choose to have skirting boards in our home, but not all of us know how to make the most out of them for a all-powerful decorative element in a room. Depending on how you repeat your skirting boards, you can make the room you are decorating a accurate visual treat.

Painting your skirting boards is one way of putting them to work seeing a decorative element in your room. On the other hand, how you positively paint them and the banner of your choice can spell the unlikeness in how powerful your baseboards will be over detail of your room ' s decor. Therefrom, when you paint your baseboards, you need to consider the overall look you intend for the room to have. In this way, you will make your baseboards blend in with the rest of the room ' s decor and you get to create harmony in the interior design of the room.

Paint Your Skirting Boards and Walls Similarly for a Minimalist Effect

One way you can create harmony in the decor of your room through the use of paint on your baseboards is by painting the same colour on your baseboards and your walls. In this way, you will create a seamless line from your walls to your skirting boards.

This scheme would be great for you if you are the type of person who prefers the minimalist approach to interior design and hate visual clutter. To keep your walls from appearing totally flat and lifeless, you can choose to paint a bright and happy colour on your walls and baseboards.

This scheme of painting a uniform colour for your walls and baseboards will work as well if you intend to hang artwork on your walls. Painting your baseboards a similar colour as your walls will act as a camouflage for your baseboards. The camouflaging paint will hide your baseboards from the eyes of anyone who enters the room and instead draw their eyes to the artwork on your walls. The same scheme applies if your walls are made of wood and the wood has a fine and beautiful grain. If the skirting boards are somehow " out of sight, " the attention of anyone who enters the room will be drawn to the wood grain.

Paint Your Skirting Boards in Contrast for a Dramatic Effect

If minimalism is not your style and if you prefer a dramatic look for the room you are decorating, you can go for painting your baseboards with a colour that is in contrast to the colour of your walls. This will look especially lovely if your baseboards have intricate carvings and mouldings. You would not want to waste those mouldings by hiding them in paint that is the same colour as your walls. In fact, the best way to set off your baseboard mouldings is by coating your walls with dark - coloured paint and them painting your baseboards with a light colour such as white.

In the end, no matter how you paint your skirting boards, it all depends on what you want out of the room. But whatever you do with your skirting boards, make sure that all your efforts will create a harmonious effect on the room.

Painting Your Boat The Inexpensive Way

When buying a pre - owned trawler or motor yacht, its easy to be rotten finish off by the exterior looks of the boat. However, I ' m not proposing that it be dismissed. I inform buyers to gage how good the used trawler or motor yachts been maintained by how daughter looks. If the gel coats all beat up and the brightwork is in unwelcome shape, I normally find the rest of the boat the identical way. It ' s wittily an pointer.

But a dull outside isn ' t a loathsome thing either. The gel coat on a used trawler or motor yacht is there for a single expectation, to make the yacht look good. It has no other function. The gel coats worst antagonist is the ultraviolet rays of the sun. After 5 - 10 years exposure in the recalescent Florida sun, almost all gel coats impel to dull and record up. Not prone burning polishing will take the gel coat back to the luster when it was new. For when you find a used trawler or motor yacht that has a dull outside but the rest of the boat is up to par, there is a simple way to reclamation her. How can we do that, by painting her?

When we purchased our trawler the Patricia Ann, missy was in actual good shape, but her gel coat was dulled and there were a few minor fiberglass nicks here and there. Professional painting of a used trawler or motor yacht is no inexpensive task. You can plan on about $1000 a foot to have it painted professionally so that was unthinkable.

I started to explore the procedure of performing the painting myself and read as much as I could about what paint would be best and how to do it. At the Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show, I talked with spokespeople from Interlux. The rep told me that both the Interlux brand of topside paints and the Awlgrip brand are very synonymous in preparation and practical application. Interlux, even so, is formulated for the do - it - yourselfer. So my choice was made, Interlux Perfection, two part paint was the way to go.

Without going into detail about what the directions state, let me just say that although working with two - part paints looks frustrating, its really very simple to do. Just stick to the directions supplied with each can of paint and you ' ll get the hang of it immediately.

I selected the roll and tip technique of practical application as spraying in a marina was impossible. Its easy to do once you practice. I practiced on a scrap piece of glass until I had it down pat. Instructions are supplied by Interlux.

Here are a couple of pointers.

Begin your project by separating the used trawler or motor yacht into workable sections; that way the project will not overwhelm you. I selected the port bow pulpit on the Patricia Ann to start my plan.

Preparing the surface to be painted takes about 3 / 4 of the time you will spend on your project. A bad surface will create a bad paint job. Start by cleaning the gel coat with thinner. This will rid the gel coat of any silicon that may have been applied that will make the paint lift after application.

The next step, take a little hammer and check out the entire area to be painted, taping to find any voids below the gel coat. When you find them and you will, grind them down with a Dremel tool. You don ' t want to spend the money and time to do a good paint job and have voids open up later on.

I used the West System epoxy resin with the fairing filler to repair the voids I found. Follow the directions provided to make the resin simple to use. Sandpaper them flat after the restored spots have dried. Rinse the dust off with water.

The hard part is not over yet?

Now we must tape the region that ' s going to be painted and take off any hardware to cause it go easier. I applied the 14 day painter ' s tape in stock at Lowe ' s or Home Depot for masking.

Now its time to paint. I used a 4 inch foam roller and the best 2 - 1 / 2 inch natural paint brush I could find, also in stock at Lowe ' s. Mix just enough paint that you can use in 2 hours, for me its 1 / 2 quart. The paint is pricey, about $85. 00 a quart and you don ' t want to be throwing any away.

Only apply paint when the outside humidity is 75 % or lower. Be certain there is no chance of rainfall.

The paint takes about 5 hrs. to fully harden. Be careful to complete your paint application no later than noon to provide complete drying. If dew settles on your paint, the moisture will turn the high gloss to a dull finish. I use a window between 10 AM and noon to paint.

All said and done, it took at least 600 hours to prep and paint the Patricia Ann. We used about 1 gallon of West System resin and 12 quarts of Interlux Perfection to paint two coats on her.

Was it worthwhile?

Absolutely! She looks beautiful!

If you have been contemplating the painting of your used trawler or motor yacht and would like to ask me some specific questions, feel free to ask.
